Lorain County Chapter Maps

State of Ohio, 1803

Subject: "Writers to Lorain County's Rootsweb often refer to the formation of the county from parts of Cuyahoga, Huron, and Medina Counties. True, but to understand the evolution of Ohio and Lorain County, I would direct the reader to the following article: Downs, Randolph Chandler, "Evolution of Ohio County Boundaries," Ohio Archaeological and Historical Publications, 36(1927):340-477.

Mr. Downs records the development from 1790 (as a part of the Northwest Territory) until 1888 when the present geography was complete. Lorain County began in 1790 as part of Hamilton County. By 1797, she was part of Wayne County. In the following years, she was at one time or another included in Trumbull, Geauga, Portage, Cuyahoga, Huron, Medina and Ashland Counties."
