2003 Lorain County Queries

LORD, FORD

I have been trying to establish when my ancestor, Thomas LORD, b. 25 Aug 1823 in Lancaster, England, d. 10 Aug 1900 in Lorain cnty and buried in Fields Cemetery, settled in Lorain County. I know that he and his wife Maria Ford, b. 12 Dec 1828 in Lancaster, England, d. 26 Feb 1895 also buried in Fields Cemetary, were married on May 19, 1850 in Lancaster, England and, according to family documents, "immediately after sailed for America. There was a 6 week voyage with some more days by rail when they arrived in Cleveland, shortly after going into the country, and finally locating on a farm in Ridgeville". The next date that I have is for their first child, Sarah LORD Kelley, born around August 6th, 1853. My query is can anyone, having access to land & deed records, establish when the farm was purchased in Ridgeville? Thank you.

OVER, LAUGHMAN

I am looking for any information, especially the obituary, on Evens Curtis OVER, who lived in Penfield Twp, Lorain Co, according to the 1910 Federal Census, presumably where he died in 1917. He was born Sep 1855 in OH to unknown parents-father born in PA, mother born in OH. The 1870 US Census, OH, Knox Co, Pike Twp, shows a Curtis Over, age 14, living in the farming household of Samuel & Henrietta WHISLER— I have no idea what his connection was to them—perhaps he was orphaned. He married Amelia Ann LAUGHMAN on 28 Sep 1876 in Medina Co. She was born Dec 1846, presumably in Homer Twp, Medina Co, the youngest daughter of Henry & Elizabeth LAUGHMAN. Curtis & Amelia had 5 children, only 1 of whom, Bertha OVER (born about 1878, left home by 1900), survived into adulthood. The 1880 US Census, OH, Medina Co, Homer Twp, incorrectly shows him living there as Kurt OVERS, with wife Amelia and daughter Bertha. The 1900 US Census, OH, Medina Co, Harrisville Twp, shows him as Evans C. OVER, living alone with wife Amelia in Lodi. Finally, the 1910 US Census, OH, Lorain Co, Penfield Twp, shows him as Evens C. Over, living alone there with wife Amelia. E. Curtis OVER died in 1917, according to his grave marker in Woodlawn Cemetery, Lodi, OH. Also buried there is his wife, showing her as Amelia LAUGHMAN (1846-1929), and their 4 children who died in childhood. Although he lived in the same geographic area as others with the OVER surname, in the area where Ashland, Wayne and Medina Counties meet, I have not been able to reliably connect Curtis OVER with any of them. In fact, based on successive censuses, I have virtually ruled him out as a son of Henry OVER, John OVER, or Martin OVER—all sons of Henry D. & Sarah OVER, who migrated from PA to Perry Twp, in what is now Ashland Co, OH. (Amelia’s sister Susan LAUGHMAN did marry the widowed Martin OVER in 1862.) I especially would like some reliable documentation of his parentage and information about his daughter Bertha. Henry K. Scherr, 1006 Trianon Lane, Manchester, MO 63011

JEFFREY, CLARK

Naamon Enoch, b. May 31, 1934 Henlawson, WV, d. Jan. 1991, L.A. Ca. Mother, Myrtle Clark-Jeffrey; father, William Lewis Jeffrey, S.S.D.I has two records, 1) death record, 2) Obit The Chronicle Telegram, Elyria, OH. If I may see the obit I would be so very pleased. He is one of many brickwalls that I have traced to another place of interest, as I do not know the reason his obit would be here since I traced him from W.V, to live in L.A. Calif. I do not know if he had formerly resided there in Ohio. His mother, my fathers sister, Deceased. I appreciate so very much your time. If I can ever be of help to you on the Grant co., IN, mailing list, or Logan CO, W.V just ask. Thanks.

CLARK, YOUNG, THOMPSON

I am looking for the parents and birth and death dates and places for W. Thompson CLARK, and I also need the death date/place of Jane YOUNG, his wife. I only know of one child, Polly, who was 16 in the 1870 Elyria P.O, Avon Twp., Lorain Co., OH census. That census shows Polly was born in Indiana. Were there other children also? I need names, dates of births, dates of marriages, death dates/places, etc. I have not been able to locate this family in any other census year besides 1870, so I am up against one of my genealogy brick walls. I do know W. Thompson CLARK was born about 1825 in Ohio. He married Jane YOUNG 18 April 1845 in Avon Twp., Loraine Co., Ohio. Jane, the wife of W. Thompson, was the daughter of Alvah YOUNG and Lucretia THOMPSON, and she was born in Vermont 29 September 1827. Her parents lived in Chatham Township, Medina Co., OH when Jane married Thompson. I have been told Jane died in Lorain Co., OH, but I have not been able to document that information yet. Any help at this point is most appreciated.

SABIN, WOOD

I have an envelope addressed to my great aunt, Anna Gilson Sabin, from the Lillywood Rebekah Lodge in Wellington. It was a receipt for her dues. I am interested in finding out more information on this lodge. It was named after Lillian Wood who died along with her father, Henry Wood, (my gggrandfather), sister and step-mother when the ship "State of Florida" sank in the Atlantic, April 18, 1884. Lillian was 15 years old. There is a marker to this family in the Brighton Cemetery. I know there is a reference to the naming of the Rebekah Lodge in "Historic Wellington Then and Now", 1983 which is the following: "The Rebekahs were named after Lillian Wood, daughter of Oddfellow Henry Wood. He and his wife and two daughters lost their lives while on a voyage to England on the Steamer Florida, April 16, 1884. For convenience it was decided to name the lodge with one word "Lillywood". (please note that that date is incorrect). I am looking for more information and possibly a photo that might have been published in an IOOC publication of Lillian Wood or maybe a photo of the ceremony when the name was changed. There may be something more about the family in the lodge meetings. Thanks for any help.

KRATZ

I continue to look for anything I can find in the way of leads to knowing more about my Kratz family, who resided in Lorain County 1853 to 1870. They resided in Black River Township during census years 1860 and 1870 (I have copies of those census records), after which they moved to Michigan. Johann "John" Kratz (may be spelled Crats or other variation) Mary (Caspary) Kratz, Christian Kratz, Henry Kratz (all born in Germany) Elizabeth, Katherine, Dora, Rosa (all born in Lorain Co, 1854-1866) Is it possible to document or obtain birth records for Lorain County births for the period of 1854-1866? John Kratz may have owned farm land during the time they were in Lorain County. Is SKS available to verify property ownership and who can obtain copies of deeds? Believe this family entered the U.S. via New York about 1853, and have evidence that a petition was made for citizenship, but have been unsuccessful in obtaining documentation that citizenship was granted. Any leads, information or suggestions are much appreciated. Thank you. Marcia, Connersville IN

McCUSKER

Hello, I am just so pleased to have finallly found my illusive paternal Great Grandfather. This is the first time I have been able to find his name on any document. Much to my surprise he is listed in the Elyria Ohio US 1880 cenus. I had never considered Ohio as no family member has ever mentioned them living there. He is listed McCUSKER, Edward, age 38, born in Ireland. He is listed as shoemaker. He is with his wife Jane MCCUSKER and son Edward born in Michigan and daughter PHOEBA age 4 months born in Ohio. Can anyone tell me how I can locate PHOEBA'S birth place in Ohio? Her birth date is about March 1880 as close as I can determine by the census. Also I would like to know how I may learn more about Edward MCCUSKER Sr, who he may have worked for as a shoemaker in Elyria in 1880? I am so ecstatic that I have found this link and I am hoping someone may assist me in pursuing more information about their life in Elyria. Thank you, Donalda McCusker, Vancouver B. C. Canada

JANOSEK

I have had trouble finding any information about Martin Janosek who came to Ohio around 1920. I see that there was a Martin Janosek listed in a 1930 census in Elyria and would like to know if he came from Bohemia/czecholslovakia around 1920. He left a daughter, Marie Ann Janosek, in the care of a convent about that time when she was only 7 years old. Her mother died when she was little. He remarried when he came here to someone by the name of Frances, but do not have any other information. Marie Ann Janosek came to Ohio when she was about 14 (this would be around 1927), so she may also be listed in a 1930 census. If you have any information that looks like this is the family please respond to:

KNIPPER, KNIEPER

I am working my my wife's side of the family. The surname is KNIPPER / KNIEPER. Most of her family arrived from Germany (Johannes Knieper born 1827 in Prussia, Rheindland and his wife Margaretha (Klee) Knieper - AKA - John and Margaret Knipper) and settled in Elyria. I am running across many individuals of the same name in my research from the Avon / French Creek area of the county. The parish records from St Mary's Church in Avon has many listed as well from the mid to late 1800's. I tend to believe that those from the Avon / French Creek area are brothers or nephews of Johannes Knieper. Any help and or insight would be appreciated. Joe Conley
