ORTENSI, ORTENTI Carlos Ortensi was my Grandfather’s brother, and when my Grandfather got off the ship at Ellis Island around 1906-07, he was to stay with Carlos. The records show that Carlos lived at 1012 or 10121/2 Broadway. The ship’s manifest has our last name spelled Ortenti. Our family has never been sure on the spelling of our last name. What was located at 1012 Broadway back at that time? Any info would be appreciated. Ken Ortensie Nov 2007 |

RANKIN I am interested in finding the family of John Carpenter Rankin and his wife Martha Ann Scott. In the 1910 census for Lorain, I see that he is about 30 years older than she. They have 2 sons, Montgomery Rankin and Earl or Charles W. Rankin, ages 6 and 4 respectively, listed with them. I do not find them in the 1920 census. In 1930, I believe that Montgomery Rankin is in Flagler Beach, Flagler, Florida, and that his mother, now Martha Howard, is with him. I think that this might be his death record: RANKIN, John C. Lake Co., OH 2/10/1917, Volume #2183, Certificate#11729. I did not find a cemetery for either of them on the Lorain County Genweb Site. but would appreciate it if someone would obtain a copy of this certificate so I could be certain this was him. SAWYER, HORSEMAN I am looking for info on David Sawyer (1822) wife Eliza, who had a son David (1848) wife Mary Ellen Horseman. Census shows that they both lived in Avon, Lorain from 1850 to 1920. If you have any info on them I would be grateful. I need to know if the son had a daughter in 1877 named Alice Sophia. If he did then that is my linage. If not I will need to find another David Sawyer that did have a daughter in 1877. The 1880& 1890 census doesn’t show the younger David anywhere, but he shows up in 1900 census in Lorain again. Her death certificate says she was born in Malta, 16 Sept 1877. Thanks for any help. Judy White, Sep 2007 |

TIFT, TEFFT, JAMES In 1824, Dorcas (Polly) James Tift and four of her seven children, Jardin b. 1798-99 in Massachusetts; John, Jr. b. 1800 in Massachusetts; Hezakiah b. ca. 1802 in Connecticut; and Ray G. b. 1806 in Connecticut, settled in Russia Township, Lorain County, Ohio, in the Connecticut Western Reserve. They had relocated from Brownville, Jefferson County, New York, near Lake Ontario. Dorcas Tift's three other children were Patience b. 1804 in Connecticut; Ezekial b. 1807-1809 in Connecticut; and Chauncey C. b. 1810-1812 in Connecticut; I don't know what became of them. Dorcas's husband, John Tift / Tefft, Sr., born between 1775 and 1777 in Richmond, Rhode Island, to Hezekiah / Hezakiah and Sarah Lillbridge Tefft, may have died in Jefferson County, New York. A handwritten note establishes that "... John Tefft, son of Hezakiah Tefft of Richmond [and] Dorcas James Daughter of Ezekiel James [and Hannah Bailey] of Richmond[,] Both of the County of Washington were Lawfully Joined together in Marriage on the 24th Day of July AD 1794 by Me [Elder - crossed out] Benjamin Barber." I'm not certain how Dorcas and family came to settle in the Connecticut Western Reserve. I don't know whose Connecticut property had been destroyed by the British in the Revolutionary War. John Tift, Sr., fought in the War of 1812 and was paid with a bounty grant of land near Peoria, Illinois. John's son Hezakiah Tift b. ca. 1802 later settled in Illinois with his son Francis K. / Frank. John Tift, Sr., was the grandson of Ezekiel and Patience Potter Tefft and great-grandson of Samuel and Mercy Barber Tefft, a Mayflower descendant. Samuel Tefft, Esq., bypassed his son Ezekial and left his farm to his grandson Hezekiah / Hezakiah Tefft b. ca. 1751-1760. Because of bad blood speculated to have existed between Ezekial and his son Hezekiah, "Tefft" eventually began to be spelled "Tift." Hezakiah Tift b. ca. 1802 married Elizabeth McCoy, a Scotswoman, who had lived in the Berkshire Mountains in Massachusetts / Vermont. Hezakiah and Elizabeth were the parents of Lorenzo b. 1820; Alvin b. 1824; Eliza C b. 1826; Celia b. 1830; Emeline C b. 1832; Harriet J. b. 1834; Josephine H. b. 1836; Francis K. / Frank b. 1841; and Emily C. b. 1844. Dorcas James Tift died in Branch County, Michigan, on October 7, 1844. I believe her grandsons Alvin Tift and Ray G. Tift also settled in Michigan. I am descended from Francis K. / Frank Tift. I am interested in contacting any descendants of John and Dorcas James Tift. Respectfully, Virginia Curtis Lee, Salt Lake City, Utah Virginia Curtis Lee, Sep 2007 |

BEAL, BIEHL, SCHMIDT, DECKER I recently found where Philip Beal, my immigrant ancestor, originated. The info comes from a film at the Family History Library in Salt Lake: Microfilm #0193177, Cities of Korkemback and Spesbach Province of Rhineland Pals. Volume #3. Line #7 states: 18 Aug 1825 Philip Biehl, 25 year old son of Theabald Biehl of Hitchenhousen and his wife Elisabetha Glisk, married Maria Eva Schmitt, widow of the late Michael Kurz. I also found the birth of their first child, Eva Biehl, born Feb 2,1826, and christened Feb 5. Her godparents were Jacob Schmitt and Maria Eli Biehl, wife of Bertald Bielh. In Germany Beal is spelled Biehl and Biel. I have yet to find Philip's other two children. Eva married Christian Decker, lived in Vermilion OH , and is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in Vermilion. The date on the marker gives her birth 1825 which should be 1826. Ken Gooden March 2007 |
CALKINS, HART Looking for information on Parthena (aka Lizzie) Calkins Hart. She was married to Simpson Hart in Summitt County @1850. The last sighting was in 1894 at her brother Nathan Calkins's home in Camden Twp., OH (according to the Republican newspaper). At that time she was visiting her brother after her home in Huntington Twp burned. In 1895 her property in Huntington Twp had delinquent taxes due. The 1870 Federal census show Simpson Hart with wife Lizzie and 4 children, Adelbert, Hattie, Lizzie and Minnie in Branch, Bronson County, MI. In the 1880 Federal census for Fulton County, town of Fayette, I show Simpson, Lizzie, with 4 children, Adelbert, Hattie, Elizabeth and Minnie. It is believed her husband died before 1890 census was taken. I have no more information for her until 1894 then nothing after that. I am looking specifically for a death record, showing her parents names or a burial lot. Regards, Gayle Calkins, Jan 2007 |

TAYLOR, MENNELL, PARKER<br> I am looking for information about Benjamin Franklin TAYLOR and his wife Ann MENNELL. Benjamin Franklin TAYLOR was born in Pittsfield, MA on 4 Aug 1805. Ann MENNELL was born in Yorkshire, England on 20 Oct 1812. My records indicate that they were married in or about 1827. Benjamin’s family lived in Grafton, Lorain County, OH for several years. His father was Jesse TAYLOR and his mother was Lucy PARKER. Jesse TAYLOR died on 5 Aug 1825 in Grafton, Lorain, OH. Lucy died later that same month on 21 Aug 1825 in Grafton, Lorain, OH. Benjamin had five siblings—Sarah Ann, James, Jesse, Caroline and William. All of the children were born in Pittsfield>, MA. Since William TAYLOR was born in 1819. The earliest that Jesse TAYLOR and his family could have moved to Ohio is 1819. My records show that Benjamin Franklin TAYLOR and his wife Ann MENNELL were living in or about Grafton, OH on 1 Apr 1841. They moved from the area sometime between June of 1843 and August of 1845. If my records are correct, Benjamin Franklin TAYLOR and Ann MENNELL lived in or about Lorain County for several years between 1819 and 1841—about a 20 year span. Benjamin Franklin TAYLOR and his wife had a son named Norman TAYLOR on 15 Sep 1828, a daughter named Lucy TAYLOR on 18 May 1830, a son named Elmer TAYLOR on 4 Nov 1831, a daughter named Henrietta TAYLOR on 26 Sep 1833, and a son named Martin Van Buren TAYLOR on 26 Dec 1835 all born in Grafton, Lorain, OH. GRALA, ROGOWSKI My grandfather Bronislaw J. GRALA and his first wife Teofilia ROGOWSKI moved to Lorain, OH between their marriage in Housatonic, MA on 19 Feb 1912 and 20 Jan 1913. Their children were all born in Lorain. According to birth and death certificates, they lived at 2848 Oakwood Ave. and 602 E. 32nd St.: Bronislaw (Benny) J. GRALA, Jr. b. 20 Jan 1913; Helena (Helen) C. GRALA b. 2 Mar 1914; and Bronislawa (Bernice) F. GRALA b. 29 Sep 1916. Teofilia died 30 Nov 1918 of pneumonia contributed to the Spanish Influenza Epidemic. It is possible there was an infant son, John, b. in 1918 who died at the same time. She was buried at Calvary Cemetery on 3 Nov 1918. >After Teofilia's death, Bronislaw moved his family to New Britain, CT and remarried there. My research to date has focused on Bronislaw and his 2nd wife from whom I am descended. However, I have tried as much as possible to gather anything I can about Teofilia for cousins who are descended from her. I've not been able to find any more information about them or her brother Josef ROGOWSKI who immigrated to America on 28 Jul 1913 and was heading to his brother-in-law (Bronislaw) in Lorain, OH. I have often wondered what drew them to Lorain, OH in the first place! I have been unable to find Teofilia's brother Josef ... perhaps there are some distant relatives out there for my cousins! And I never found proof of John's birth or death. Any suggestions on where I can direct my search ould be greatly appreciated. WICK, HOFFMAN, JEHLE I'm trying to find the parents of Lydia and Mary Wick from Elyria, Lorain Co., OH. Lydia (1878-1957) married John J. Hoffman (1878-1950) in Cleveland in 1904. Mary (1873-1967) married John Jehle (1861-1941) in Elyria before 1900. Mary's obituary states that she was born in Elyria. Lydia died at her sister Mary Jehle's home on Huron St., so the relationship is certain, but I can't find the family in the 1880 census, and in 1900 Mary was married and Lydia was living on her own in Elyria. Does anyone know anything about the Wick family? I believe the parents were born in Germany. Joanne Gaudio, June 2006 |

NICHOLS I have been searching for the parents/siblings of Charles Ernest NICHOLS [1865-1937] reported via death certificate to have been born in Lorain County Columbia Station. Charles is reflected in the US Federal census of 1900/1910/1920 Cuyahoga Co OH and the 1930 Summit County [Copley Twsp.] Charles died in EUSTIS Florida [203 Mary Street] in 1937 and I am trying to establish the connection (if any) between him and John Darius Nichols [who also had a summer home in Eustis Fl in the 1930-40 time frame.] There is a group of NICHOLS' in Copley Township in 1880 but I cannot specifically link Charles b 1865 with them in the census records. There is, however, a Charles (age 15) listed in the 1880 Lorain Co Oh census in the Adeline Nichols household. He is listed as an "adopted son". Earlier yet in 1870 census w/Adeline Nichols (widow) is Charles E. WILDER (age 5). This complicates matters. Was Charles E Wilder b 1865 adopted and had a name change to NICHOLS? The best I can do at this point is to work backwards from what I know. I have not seen any researchers who have "claimed" Charles NICHOLS b 1865 in the 1880 Lorain County census. [This group is off of Marcus Nichols b 1806 Conn., wife Adeline b. 1816 NY. Marcus died before the 1860 census where Adeline is now listed as a 54 year old widow with sons Henry (14), George (12), Charles (10), Franklin (4) Noted for possible ties to CHARLES ERNEST NICHOLS B. 1865 IN OHIO, PARENTS UNKNOWN. 1880 U.S. Federal census Columbia in the County of Lorain State of Ohio page 413, house 107: Nichols, Adaline 64 w farmer NY VT NY Busbee, Alexander 47 s servant NY Ireland NY Nichols, Charles 15 s adopted son OH Mich Mich 1870 US Federal census Lorain County Ohio house 47 Nichols, Adaline 54 NY--Franklin 14 OH Wilder, Charles E. 5 OH Busby, Alexander 37 NY Mitchell, Mary S. 14 OH 1860 US Federal census Lorain County Columbia OHIO house 1026 Nichols, Adaline 44 NY--Henry 14 OH--George 12 OH--Charles 10 OH--Franklin 4 OH Busby, Alexander 27 OH Frashine, Catherine 15 Germany 1850 US Federal census Lorain County Columbia OHIO house 304 Nichols, Marcus 44 CONN--Adaline 32 NY--Emilene 17 OH--Merrick 16 OH----Milo 12 OH--Nilson 9 OH--Henry 4 OH--George 2 OH--Charles 6/12 OH My Charles E NICHOLS worked for the railroad his entire life as a telegrapher in Copley where the Copley Historical Society operates. Charles E Nichols first married Marry Ann Bray [1868-1915] daughter of Samuel Bray of Richland County. They married in Shiloh in 1887. Mary Ann was born in 1868 in Shiloh and died in 1915 in Cuyahoga County. Marry is reportedly buried in Shiloh - I have not been able to confirm this. Charles second married FRANCES E. SHERBONDY [b. 1869] widow of Milton Sherbondy. Milton SHERBONDY [b1862], son of Hiram [b. 1837] grew up in Portage, Summit County. Milton died in 1933. Milton Jay Sherbondy [1862-1933] was married to Frances E. After Milton died, in 1935 Frances married Charles. Charles Ernest retired as a rail road telegrapher June 1936, having worked for 40 years in Copley, OH (Summit County). Shortly after he "retired" after June 1936 he & Frances went to EUSTIS Florida, an area not that densely populated in 1935-36. Coincidentally JOHN DARIUS NICHOLS left [North Olmsted] Ohio sometime after the 1920 census and moved to Eustis Florida. The Elyria "Chronicle Telegram" newspaper reflects numerous blurbs in the "social" column beginning about August 1932 noting Eustis as his "home". John Darius Nichols and wife Adell are both buried in Butternut Ridge Cemetery North Olmsted. Charles died in Eustis FL in 1937 and his body was transported back to Ohio where he is buried in Akron's Glendale cemetery. Interesting is that Charles Nichols was interred with/ next to Milton Sherbondy (France's first husband) & Frances joined both of them in 1945. All three of them share one monument:) According to Charles' death certificate he was born March 10, 1865 in Columbia Station Ohio. This info came from Frances and may not be entirely accurate. Clearly he has ties to Huron County / Richland County /Summit County (& perhaps Lorain County) before the 1900 - 1930 records. I believe Charles was buried in Akron's Glendale cemetery because Frances had a plot there. Charles and Marry had children all born in Huron County: Stella Martha b 1890 m. (1) Hubert Kullman (2) J. Fred Brinkman Ray Ernest b. 1893 m (1) May Edith Thomsen (2) Verna Catherine Kline Helen Margaret b. 1895 m (1) J. Paul Turner (2) Milliard Kenyon> Arthur Bray b. 1899 m. Evelyn Anderson Earl Owen b. 1904 m. "Martha" [divorced 1958 Dade County Fl] I know the parents of Marry Ann Bray NICHOLS and the naming patterns of their children are not reflected in her family's naming pattern. I can only assume Stella Martha was named after Charles' mother...perhaps Ray Ernest after Charles' father. What is most intriguing is that during this time frame (in Lorain County specifically) is a Richmond/Richmund Nichols who did have a son born circa 1845 (Charles) who served in the civil war, served in both Ohio & Mich and died of wounds sustained before 1870. I have corresponded with various researchers of this line and no one "claims" any lineage from Charles son of Richmond line. Does any of this ring any bells to any of you all? Does anyone have any suggestions where I can dig further for info? I am planning a trip to Ohio in July with my husband to try to flush this out.
