Rev. Francis H. Diederich, 77, pastor emeritus in Akron
The Rev. Francis H. Diederich, 77, pastor emeritus of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Akron and former assistant pastor here, died Tuesday at Akron General Hospital after about a month's illness with cancer.
Services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. Francis de Sales Church, 4019 Manchester Rd., Akron.
Father Diederich was also assistant pastor at St. Thomas Acquinas parish on Ansel Rd. for three years before going to Akron in 1948 to found St. Francis de Sales parish. He supervised construction of a new church in 1967 and remained as pastor emeritus after retiring from the pastorate in 1974.
He knew every school bus route in his parish and in the old days would drive the bus himself when a driver called in sick. It gave him a chance to be with children. He loved them, and the sentiment was returned. If he stopped in the school yard, he was soon the center of a juvinile cluster.
At 48, he became the victim of a bone disease which gradually affected his ability to walk, and he spent the last four or five years in a wheelchair.
He said a 7 a.m. mass in the rectory, heard confessions and celebrated one mass in the church on Sundays until he became ill at the beginning of August.
Father Diederich was born in Cleveland and grew up in St. Aloysius Parish. He went to Cathedral Latin School
and John Carroll University. After studying at St. Mary Seminary here, he spent 1928-29 at the University of Louvain in Belgium completing his theological studies. He was ordained in 1931 and was assistant pastor of St. Paul Church in Cleveland until 1945.
Until the last five years, his two-week vacation was usually spent on the North Ridgeville farm of his brother, Albert, riding a tractor.
Also surviving is a sister, Sister Mary Roseleen, a Notre Dame nun in Chardon.
